Eco-Friendly Debate
Led by a student-driven team, Dominican University of California will strive to host an eco-friendly event on its San Rafael campus for the 2010 California Governor’s Debate on October 12.
The team of students and professionals are working with University administrators, department heads and outside contractors to the event in every way possible.
Matthew Metcalf-Welch, a 2009 graduate of Dominican's GreenMBA program, is the team organizer. He is joined by current students Raymond Baltar, Diana Connolly and Amy Grimes.
The eco-friendly team is developing plans for Waste Management (integrating recycling and compost); Marketing and Programming (print only what is necessary, print with recycled paper and sustainable inks); Energy Generation (Bio-Diesel Generators, purchasing carbon offsets); Greenhouse Gas Footprint (using debate data to estimate transportation, energy and waste production for footprint calculations); Food and Beverage Services (working with catering and related services to ensure that food and beverages are offered and disposed of in a sustainable manner; ensuring that locally produced organic foods will be served to the largest extent possible).
Following the debate, the Dominican eco-friendly team plans to publish a report aimed to help serve as a practical model for corporate and other large-scale projects and events.
