Tom Brokaw to referee Whitman-Brown debate

Former NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw will moderate one of the debates between the two major-party gubernatorial candidates.

Republican Meg Whitman and Democrat Jerry Brown have both agreed to appear at an Oct. 12 debate, sponsored by Dominican University of California.

"This election comes at a critical time for the citizens of California, and as the campaign unfolds over the next few months, the country will be watching to see who will become the next governor," Brokaw said in a statement.

"I am particularly excited about participating in this debate because I began my NBC News career covering California politics in 1966."
